  • Sanborn Maps - microfilm and bound copies of Marquette County communities
  • Photograph collection - filed by street address, city scenes, birdseye views, people
  • Mining Journal index cards - residences listed by city and street
  • Marquette County and City Directories - 1874 to present
  • U.S. Federal census - 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920
  • Centennial booklets and published histories of Marquette communities

SEARCH WRITTEN RECORDS

1) City and County Directories list names and addresses of occupants by year. Work from the current year backwards by address.
2) Photographs picture the original home and can be found by scanning street scenes, people, birdseye views and home addresses.
3) Newspaper articles report when home was built. Scan papers for notices of auctions, real estate sales and obituary notices of owners. Check for a newspaper index.
4) Published histories and centennial booklets show homes and street scenes.
5) City Sanborn maps give detailed aerial views of dwellings and other town buildings.

  • Where are the records regarding the home?

BEGIN AT HOME:

     
Check interior and exterior characteristics to determine style of architecture. Look for blueprints and photographs in home storage areas. Ask neighbors and former owners about the home's history.

SEARCH PUBLIC RECORDS:

1) Deeds list previous owners and sales activities. Use legal description of property to access these records.

2) Tax Assessor records list homes by address, size of property, assessed property value and year built.

3) Probate court records and wills reveal information on ownership, size of property and contents of home.
